Conjunctivitis symptoms in adults

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, a thin membrane that covers the eye. Symptoms can include redness, irritation, and a burning sensation in the eye. Conjunctivitis can be caused by infections or allergies, in which case it is called "allergic conjunctivitis." It can also be caused by bacteria, viruses, or fungi and is known as "infectious conjunctivitis." Infectious conjunctivitis is contagious and can be spread from one person to another through touch or by breathing the same air as an infected person. It can last for a few days to a few weeks but is easily treated with over-the-counter eye drops or prescription antibiotics. Mild cases of infectious conjunctivitis do not require medical treatment and may go away on their own after a few days. However, severe cases of infectious conjunctivitis may need treatment with antibiotics in order to achieve a full recovery.
